Celebrating 105 years – SSP Women first in the Nation to Vote

Wednesday, August 27, 2025

Join the City of South St. Paul as we light up Lawshe Park to honor the SSP 90 women that voted that day.

On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was certified into the U.S. Constitution, forever protecting American women’s rights to vote.  On August 27, 1920, South St Paul held a special election on a water bond referendum giving South St. Paul women the opportunity to vote.  Marguerite Newburgh of South St. Paul was the first woman in her precinct to cast her vote making her the first women in the nation to vote after the ratification of the 19th Amendment.   The location of the vote was the original City Hall which ls now Lawshe Park.

Our thanks to Complete Weddings and Events for partnering with the City to light up the park in suffrage colors.  In addition, 90 luminary bags will be lit up in honor of 90 South St. Paul women that voted in 1920.  At 7:30 pm, there will be a short presentation by Jessica Ellison, the Executive Director of the National Council for History Education.  We hope that you can join us honoring the 90 women and the history of South St. Paul.
