Statistics show that the 2024–2025 flu season in Minnesota was exceptionally severe, causing a record number of hospitalizations and placing a significant strain on health systems.
All told, it was one of the worst flu seasons in the state in over a decade. In February 2025, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) reported that 202 flu-related deaths had occurred during the 2024-2025 season.
Essentia Health in Duluth says that most medical experts agree that vaccinations are among the safest and surest ways to protect against the flu. That includes professional organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommend the flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older.
While it’s still possible to get a different type of flu from what you were vaccinated from, the vaccine can make your symptoms less severe. Studies have shown that vaccinated people who still get sick are less likely to suffer severe outcomes, such as hospitalization, ICU admission, or death.
