If this Israel-Hamas peace deal holds, if it lasts any time at all, it will be one of the more remarkable peace deals brokered in some time. It appears to be a done deal. So, now, enter a former president who had nothing to do with the deal, who had nothing ever at any time to do with any Middle East peace deal, with a typically grandiose statement on X.

….and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered. More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.
Let’s break that down, shall we?

First, yes, this has been two years of unimaginable suffering for Israeli families, many of whom lost loved ones, and who had loved ones taken into hideously cruel captivity. It has been two years of unimaginable suffering for many in Gaza, too, many of whom are no doubt wishing Hamas would just go away. But what Barack Obama never mentions is that Hamas started this by attacking Israel. They started it by launching one of the most brutal, atrocious (in the literal sense of the word) attacks the modern world has ever seen. Former President Obama doesn’t seem to feel the need to mention that.
Second, yes, aid can start flowing more freely into Gaza – let’s leave all the Greta Thunberg jokes aside for now. Former President Obama again doesn’t mention that the people of Gaza initially voted to give Hamas control of the region. And he doesn’t mention that there are no “Palestinian” people. The name was a construct of the Romans, later of the British. There is no Palestinian language. There’s not any distinct Palestinian culture. These are not people without a home – they are people who claim an identity that doesn’t exist. They are Middle Eastern Arab Muslims – with nothing unique to distinguish them from any other Middle Eastern Arab Muslims in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, or… Israel.
Third and most egregiously, Barack Obama doesn’t mention the name of the one man who made all this happen. The one man who helped make this deal. President Donald John Trump. President Trump made this deal happen, as he has made a bunch of peace deals happen. He hasn’t managed to get Russia and Ukraine to stop with the snap-and-slash time yet, and that one may never happen.
But this deal is done, and President Trump deserves a lot of the credit. Now, personally, I doubt it will last – not if it leaves any remnants of Hamas still in Gaza or anyone else. They will use any cease-fire as a time to catch their breath, to recruit, to rearm, to retrain, and eventually, to plan the next attack. But for right now, it looks like the shooting will stop. And President Trump helped make it happen.
So, in this one statement, Barack Obama has proved once more that he is now as he was when he was president: A shallow, vindictive, petty little man.
