Closure of Grand Avenue segment ends Tuesday with free community celebration – Twin Cities

A six-month closure of a popular section of Grand Avenue will end Tuesday with a community celebration hosted by the city of St. Paul.

The four-block reconstruction between Macalester and Wheeler streets was part of a larger project to rebuild Grand between Snelling and Fairview avenues. Several private construction projects were conducted at the same time in the area, which has a concentration of retail and hospitality businesses.

The reopening celebration and ribbon-cutting will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Mayor Melvin Carter will deliver remarks about the project, the first to be completed by the Department of Public Works under the Common Cent project. In 2023, voters approved a 1% increase to the local option sales tax to be used for repairs and improvements to streets, bridges, parks and recreational facilities within the city.

The four-block segment of Grand Avenue near Macalester College will remain closed during the free event, which will include live music from the Fat Chance Jug Band, fall-themed family-friendly activities and games.

Grand Avenue from Snelling to Fairview will reopen to vehicle traffic by 11 p.m. Tuesday.
