In-Person Events
Free Yoga at Union Depot
What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, June 9, and Wednesday, June 11, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot
Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.
Discovering Your Stage Face
What: Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, June 10, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Barely Brothers Records
Discover how to use makeup to create or refine your clown persona. Julia Swanson, an experienced Ringling Brothers clown, will share her knowledge and help attendees refine their own stage faces. Bring your makeup kit and mirror, if available. Supplies will also be available for purchase on site. Free admission.
Backyard Concert Series: Rap, Classical, Metal, Experimental, Pop, Oh My
What: Music
When: Tuesday, June 10, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Galilee Evangelical Lutheran Church, Roseville
Each concert in this series includes a unique blend of genres created by local independent musicians. This first session includes the music of Carnage the Executioner (rapper/beatboxer) and DJ Piecemeal (hip-hop), May and the Ladies (femme pop), and Elena Stabile and Benjamin Downs (avant-garde Norwegian). Despite the series name, none of the concerts are actually in a backyard. Admission on a sliding scale from $0 to $50 per concert. Series passes also available.
BuckSlam June Poetry Open Mic
What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books
Come to listen, read, or just hang out with other poetry lovers in this first ever unscored open-mic event. Sign-ups to read open the day of the event. $1 cover. The venue requires masks be worn inside.
Nerd Nite Out: June Edition
What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, June 11, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Black Hart of St. Paul
The organizers of Nerd Nite invite you out for a night of “nice drink, good company, and some cold. hard. facts.” Those cold, hard facts come in the form of monthly “nerdy TED talks” in which community members dive into a topic they are passionate about. June’s topics include double-headers, “FIRE-eating,” and Neopets.
Walker Art Center Free Thursdays: Summer Social Soundtrack
What: Music
When: Thursday, June 12, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center, Wurtele Upper Garden
Honoring both Pride Month and Black Music Month, the featured music at this week’s free Thursday event spans generations and genres of Black queer sound. Snacks and beverages available for purchase.
Minneapolis Movies in the Parks: Wonka
What: Movies, Community
When: Thursday, June 12, at 8:55 p.m.
Where: Victory Memorial Drive
Enjoy a night of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is Wonka, a prequel to the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that portrays Wonka’s early days as a chocolatier. Check out the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board calendar for a complete schedule of Movies in the Parks screenings.
The SOTA Movement: Minnesota’s Street Dance Festival
What: Music
When: Friday, June 13, through Sunday, June 15
Where: Park Square Theatre
A three-day celebration of street dance and hip-hop, including performances and workshops each day. Workshops are free and open to all levels and ages. Some individual events require tickets, starting at $10.
4th Street Fantasy
What: Convention
When: Friday, June 13, through Sunday, June 15
Where: DoubleTree Park Place, St. Louis Park
This fantasy fiction convention brings together anyone who creates or enjoys fantasy fiction to explore the boundaries of fantastical storytelling in its many formats. Join the conversation and share your ideas. $135 for the entire event; individual days are also available. Masks in all convention spaces and a same-day negative COVID test result on the first day of the convention are required.
Broadway Rave: A Musical Theater Dance Party
What: Music, Nightlife
When: Friday, June 13, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Fine Line
Broadway Rave celebrates the best in showtunes and musical theater. Dress up as your favorite character and sing along to Broadway hits from Hamilton, Wicked, and more while dancing the night away! Tickets are $27 for general admission and $45.84 for reserved table seating. Event is 18+.
2000s Rooftop Drag Brunch
What: Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 14, at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop
Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week’s theme is hits from the 2000s: Britney, Destiny’s Child, Paris Hilton, and more! Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $20.28 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.
Midwest Cosplay Quest Monthly Cosplayers and Crafters Meetup
What: Meetup, Cosplay
When: Saturday, June 14, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Central Library
Bring your supplies and join fellow cosplayers and crafters for an afternoon of fun and projects. Food and covered drinks allowed. Dressing up or bringing a project is optional, but definitely part of the fun.
Manga Club: Orange: The Complete Collection, Vol. 1
What: Comics
When: Saturday, Jun 14, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Next Chapter Booksellers
Discuss a new manga title every month at Next Chapter Booksellers. This free manga book club also provides tasty Japanese snacks and discounts on manga purchases in the store. Check out the event page for more information, including the tentative upcoming schedule. For June, the read of choice is Orange: The Complete Collection, Vol. 1.
Shieldmaiden Sunday

When: Sunday, June 15 at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games
Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event and a great opportunity to work on projects in great company.

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series—Sherlock Holmes: A Sleuth’s Legacy in a Modern World

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, English professor Kristopher Mecholsky explores the origins and popularity of Sherlock Holmes, modern characters inspired by Holmes, and whether Holmes may be described as neurodivergent. Virtual Book Discussion: The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso

This month’s discussion hosted by the North Country Gaylaxians Book Club will be on The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso, a sci-fi mystery where time resets in increasingly macabre ways while our heroine and her nemesis have to work together to save their city.

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series—An Ancient Tour of Death and the Afterlife

Join Robert Garland, author of What to Expect When You’re Dead: An Ancient Tour of Death and the Afterlife, for a tour of the varied traditions and beliefs of many ancient cultures. How have those traditions survived into modern times? How did ancient peoples resolve the many questions about any afterlife?
