A MAN has died after falling 100 feet to his death while trying to take a selfie from a hotel rooftop in the Canary Islands.
The 48-year-old was on the eighth floor in the early hours of Sunday morning before the fall.
The man, who was a Canary Islands resident, had climbed onto the railing of the building’s rooftop bar terrace to take the snapshot, police have said.
He then became unstable and fell from the roof to the promenade below at around 1.30am.
While emergency services rushed to the scene, he was pronounced dead upon their arrival.
He was with a friend at the time of the horrifying accident.
It happened in the La Puntilla area of Las Canteras.
The tragic incident comes as authorities urge people not to put themselves in harm’s way to take pictures.
People are particularly cautioned against attempting risky selfies in high, unstable or coastal spots.
Many tourist hot spots around the world, including the Canary Islands, have seen a rise in people attempting to take selfies and pictures in dangerous positions.
Just days earlier, an American tourist was impaled on a metal fence in Rome at the Colosseum while reportedly trying to take a selfie.
According to witnesses, the 47-year-old could not free himself and screaming in pain until he passed out.
The man, a US citizen living in Taiwan, reportedly lost his footing while trying to climb the fence, according to Il Messaggero.
Paramedics quickly reached the scene, but it took them 20 minutes to get the man free from the spike.
He was rushed to hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery and he needed more than 80 stitches.
The man had been in the Italian capital with family and friends for a few days ahead of the horrifying incident.
Another tourist reportedly fell to their death last year in Colombia while trying to take a selfie.
Tobias Fischer, 35, had been trying to take his pic at a viewpoint in the Dumbira forest before he fell.
His body was found by fellow hikers shortly afterwards, who called the emergency services.
Investigators ruled that his death was an accident.
