Crawley, West Sussex has the highest proportional number of asylum seekers and supported refugees anywhere in the UK.
Yet when the Today in Focus host Helen Pidd called the local council on the day the figures were released, she was met with silence.
“I’d rather not comment on it, to be honest,” said its Labour leader … before he even heard what story he was being asked to comment on.
Helen and producer Eleanor Biggs head to Crawley themselves to see what things look like on the ground, talking to Afghan refugees excited to start their new lives, local organisers who help them integrate and residents wishing they weren’t there at all.
And they ask: amid all the talk of the pressures of immigration and asylum, what does it actually look like in a place such as Crawley?
