During a nearly 2.5-hour telepphone conversation Thursday, the Russian and US presidents discussed the Ukraine crisis, and potential for a new Russia-US summit in Budapest, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said.

Here are the key points from their discussion:

🔶Trump was the one to suggest Budapest as a possible venue for the summit. Putin fully supported the idea.

🔶As Foreign Minister Lavrov and Secretary of State Rubio work on the details, the exact date of the summit will be clarified.

🔶Thursday’s conversation was initiated by the Russian side, and was “highly productive,” according to Ushakov.

🔶 Putin “began the conversation by congratulating Donald Trump on his success in normalizing the situation in the Gaza Strip,” saying “the US president’s peacekeeping efforts have been highly praised in the Middle East, in the US itself and in most countries around the world.”

🔶The Ukraine crisis took center stage in Thursday’s call, with Putin reaffirming Russia’s commitment to a political-diplomatic resolution, while emphasizing that Russia’s military maintains the strategic initiative “along the entire line of combat contact.”

🔶 “Trump repeatedly emphasized the need for a swift peace in Ukraine. The thought that the Russia-Ukraine conflict has proven the most difficult for the US president’s peacemaking efforts was present in all of Trump’s statements throughout the conversation,” Ushakov said.

🔶 “Putin reiterated his thesis that Tomahawks won’t change the situation on the battlefield, but they will cause significant damage to relations between our countries” if they are sent to Ukraine by the US, Ushakov said.

🔶Trump mentioned his upcoming meeting with Zelensky, confirming he would consider Putin’s views in those talks.

“Overall, I would say that the telephone contact between the Russian and US presidents was very useful, and the two leaders agreed to stay in touch,” Ushakov summed up.
