A passenger died when she was trapped after a fiery single-vehicle crash in St. Paul early Sunday.
Officers responded about 3:25 a.m. to Arlington and Prosperity avenues, where they found a vehicle on the grass with heavy front-end damage. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.
Police found the driver, who had a leg injury, lying behind the vehicle and moved her a safe distance away. The woman reported she’d tried to get the passenger out, but had not been able to, said Sgt. Toy Vixayvong, a St. Paul police spokesman.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
St. Paul Fire Department medics took the driver to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury to her leg, Vixayvong said. She was unable to complete field sobriety tests, due to her injury, and police obtained a search warrant for medical staff to draw her blood for testing, according to police.
The driver, who police said was cooperative with the investigation, reported she’d struck a curb and the vehicle went up on the grass. The investigation remains underway.
