Stillwater and East Ridge were locked in a tightly contested Suburban East Conference duel in the state semifinals of the boys lacrosse tournament on Thursday afternoon at Chaska High School.

Until the second-seeded Ponies seized control in the final frame.

Stillwater outscored sixth-seeded East Ridge 5-1 in the fourth quarter to secure a 12-6 victory and clinch its first ever state title game berth. The Ponies will meet top-seeded Edina at 6 p.m. Saturday at Eden Prairie High School in the championship bout.

Grant Giese scored six goals for second-seeded Stillwater in the victory, but five of his teammates also scored. Isaac Johnston netted two goals for the undefeated Ponies.

Mac O’Brien and Oliver Stalsberg each scored twice for East Ridge, which was making its first state tournament appearance.

Edina topped Lakeville North 10-4 in the other semifinal. The Hornets led 6-1 after three quarters. Like Stillwater, Edina will also be making its first title game appearance on Saturday. This spring marks Edina’s second tournament appearance and first since 2012.

Eli Busse had three goals Thursday for the Hornets, while Cooper Anderson had two goals and two assists.

Lane Johnson and Carson Piscitiello each had two goals for the Panthers.
