In an opinion released Wednesday morning, the Minnesota Supreme Court largely sided with a transgender weightlifter who sued USA Powerlifting after the organization banned her from competing in its women’s division.

The decision comes after a lengthy legal battle that began in 2021. Athlete JayCee Cooper alleged in her lawsuit that USA Powerlifting, a national organizer of weight lifting competitions, violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act.

MPR News reporter Matt Sepic joined Minnesota Now to explain the ruling.
