The Austin football team closed out its regular season schedule with a 42-0 loss to Zumbrota-Mazeppa on senior night in Art Hass Stadium Wednesday night.

Ryan Tesmer ran the opening kick-off back 84 yards for a score for the Cougars (6-2 overall) and he added a pair of TD grabs to keep ZM ahead.

Austin (1-7 overall) made an early stop in its own territory with its defense in the first quarter as the team’s youth stepped up.

“We feel confident with where we’re at with things,” Austin head coach Ed Schmitt said. “We have four sophomores starting on defense and I actually thought they played pretty well. The future is bright.”

Austin was able to move the ball on the ground better than it had in the past as Keon Adams ran for 28 yards and Matthew Oldenkamp gave the team runs of 17- and 12-yards in the first half.

“We’ve been working on the sleds and doing the small things like working on offensive linemen’s stances and moving forward instead of being back on our heels,” Schmitt said. “Overall, we’ve been seeing improvement.”

Last year at this time, the Packers ran out of varsity players and they had to forfeit their playoff game. This year, the team will most likely have enough players to compete in the Section 1AAAA Tournament next week.

“We talked a little about having the mentality of leaving things better than we found them,” Schmitt said. “For them, it’s been about building over the last four years to make the program better.”
