Sean O’Malley has never lost a rematch in his UFC career.
He’s only had one do-over, but we can’t bother the Suga State Athletic Commission with trivial details ahead of UFC 316 this Sat. night (June 7, 2025) at Prudential Center in Newark. Instead, let’s focus on the fact that O’Malley fell to Marlon Vera at UFC 252, then came back to whoop “Chito” at UFC 299 a couple of years later.
Expect something “very similar” against Merab Dvalishvili.
“I wouldn’t accept the fight, I wouldn’t have asked for the fight if I didn’t truly believe I could go out there and beat him,” O’Malley told ESPN MMA. “I know I can. And I know I will on June 7th. I look at it as it’s an exciting challenge. Like, it’s not like something that bothers me throughout the day or like, if this fight ended up not happening ever, it’s not going to bug me. I know I’m better than him.”
O’Malley wasn’t “better than him” at UFC 306 last fall in Las Vegas.
“I’m very grateful for the UFC for giving me the opportunity to go out there and fight him again,” O’Malley continued. “Same with the ‘Chito’ thing, it took me three and a half years. I knew I could beat him. I knew there would be a time and a place and that happened. Felt very similar for this fight. I’m like, ‘it’s going to happen sooner or later.’ And it’s happening sooner and I’m very happy with that.”
This marks the first fight for O’Malley since getting unplugged by “The Machine” inside Sphere. As for Dvalishvili, who departed “Sin City” with O’Malley’s strap, he went on to defend the 135-pound title against Umar Nurmagomedov atop the UFC 311 fight card earlier this year in “The Golden State.”
