This Midwestern State Has Some of the Best Fall Foliage in the U.S., According to Travel Experts

Fall is just around the corner, making now the prime time to plot out your leaf peeping adventure. And while all of New England, the Catskills, and the Great Smoky Mountains certainly make for excellent foliage getaways, there’s another place travel experts would love for you to consider: Michigan. 

“I’m a huge fan of leaf peeping in the fall, and while most people are going to head to New England, my top recommendation is Michigan for that spectacular autumn foliage,” Travelmation president and founder, Adam Duckworth, shared with Travel + Leisure.

As for a more specific spot to check out the leaves change, Duckworth noted: “Few places can beat the charm of Mackinac Island in the fall. You are surrounded on all sides by Lake Huron, and you’ll find gorgeous trails, historic charm, and beautiful lakeside hotels. My absolute favorite part? No cars are allowed on the island, so you can get around on bikes or even a horse-drawn carriage.”

Andrew Satkowiak from The Luxury Travel Agency agreed, noting his favorite place in the fall is Northern Michigan. “Spending time in Traverse City and Petoskey is so special in the fall,” he said. “The summer crowds have thinned, the air is getting crisp, and the turning leaves of red, orange, and yellow make a spectacular sight against the crisp blue sky.” 

He recommends taking a boat ride on Lake Michigan, followed by a “nice glass of wine or cup of coffee overlooking the lake, for fall at its best.” And if you’ve got the time, take a scenic drive along the lake for even more views. 

Sherri Campbell Fenton, the managing owner of Black Star Farms, also recommends the northern half of the state for its breathtaking color. “Rolling hills, rural farms, orchards, vineyards, and winding rivers create an authentic and relaxing escape from city life and everyday responsibilities,” Fenton told T+L.

Of course, she recommends staying at a winery so you can sleep in the heart of the region. “These smaller, charming inns provide a slower pace, a front-row seat to grape harvest season, a chance to sample some of Michigan’s burgeoning wine scene, and opportunities to meet the welcoming locals,” she said.

Though Duckworth added that if your budget allows, the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is the ultimate in fall luxury. “Staying there is like taking a step back in time with the old-world hospitality where guests dress up for dinner, go dancing, and sit on rocking chairs overlooking the water,” Duckworth said. “The hotel opened way back in the late 1800s and has been a must-see destination ever since.”
